Australia’s Welfare 2011 http://www.aihw.gov.au/publication-detail/?id=10737420537

Australia spent $137 billion on welfare in 08/09 excluding unemployment benefits.  In contrast $113 billion was spent on health. Almost two thirds of Australians lived in capital cities in 2010.  There is now strong evidence of a generation gap in regional areas, with the urban population much younger than country areas. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are over-represented as users of homelessness services. Between 2001 and 2011 median house prices rose by 147% whole median household disposable income rose by 57%.  Around 400 000 dwellings were occupied as social housing in June 2010 and around 250 000 applicants are waiting for allocations of transfers within the social housing system.

Australian Social Policy Journal This issue includes articles addressing: young Australians and social inclusion; perceptions and experiences of cannabis use by young adults living with a mental illness, and; the relationship between life events, socioeconomic status and psychological distress in mothers of infants.

Arts Queensland’s blog – aqblog Arts and Recovery  Former Victorian Emergency Services Commissioner Bruce Esplin discusses his experiences of the role of the arts in recovering from trauma.  He describes encounters with survivors of the 1939 Black Friday bushfires and the role that art played in his own life during the catastrophic 2009 Victorian bushfires.  For stories and projects relating to arts and culture in regional Queensland, visit Regional Exchange on Arts Queensland’s website.
